Mt. OLIVE TOURNAMENT RESULTS

The Dodgers placed 5th out of 10 teams at the Mt. Olive Tournament. Anthony Costa went 1-2 on the day and finished 4th, Mike Boardman 2-1 placing 3rd. Patsy Davis had a real tough weight division with a state place winner from a year a go, along with a state qualifier who won a match down at Atlantic City, a district champ and himself. He finished 3rd and pinned the district champ to gain that honor and also finishing 2-1 on the day. Ryan Colwell may have had the tournament's second toughest weight. He met a well respected sophomore from Mendham, Harrington, in the final and came away victorious for the gold medal. Ryan went 3-0 on the day and wins the seasons first OW award. Other varsity wrestlers with wins were Heber Santos, 1-1 on the day, and Christian Mazzocchi who wrestled once and won, but had to withdraw from the tournament for medical reasons. Max Gotsch, Peter Willis, John McAuliffe, Tom Tracy and Jack Anzul rounded out the rest of the Dodger varsity squad.

In the JV portion of the tournament, the day was cut short due to snow. Everyone except Matt Allen was able to get two matches in before the tournament was suspended. Ed Carr, Brett Spelker, and Conor Stark all went 2-0 and reached the finals while Matt Allen joined them in the finals with a 1-0 record. All four of those wrestlers will receive the JV OW award. Reaching the consolation round were: Nick Picillo, Doug Capuder, and Nick Haboj. Eamon Epstein, Colin Gooby, Jaun Giraldo, and Matt Welter all finished 1-1. Sebastian Restrepo at 1-2 was joined by Matt Fastiggi, Boris Klimushkin, Alex Post, and Kevin Choi.

SCOTCH PLAINS RESULTS

The Dodgers started off the 2010 season with a win over the Raiders of Scotch Plains 52-22. Ed Carr supplied the opening points with a pin. Tom Tracy suffered a tough 1-point decision. Mike Boardman saw a much improved opponent he faced a year ago and came away with a major decision. Nick Picillo received a forfeit and Patsy Davis nails down a pin. Doug Capuder and Max Gotsch were a bit over matched as each gave up a fall. Peter "Don't look away" Willis rallies from behind and wraps up a cradle to plant his opponent for 6! Peter wins the OW for his efforts. Conor Stark and Eamon Epstein save the team bonus points by giving up a major decision and a decision respectively. Ryan Colwell, Christian Mazzocchi, Anthony Costa, and Jack Anzul make it look easy as the reel off 4 pins in a row.

The JV were over matched, mostly by the aggressiveness of the Scotch Plains squad. Matt Allen, Juan Giraldo, MAtt Fastiggi, Sebastian Restrepo, Boris Klimushkin, Nick Haboj, Matt Land, and MAtt Welter all came up short on the evening. Joe Kennedy, Alex Post, and Kevin Choi all received wins by way of pin. Alex Post was by far the most aggressive Dodger wrestler on the JV mat and brings home the OW for his contibution.

HANOVER PARK RESULTS

The Dodgers could not repeat as they did the night before. Instead they gave up a 30 point margin to the neighboring Hornets 23-53. Heading into the match we knew a win was unlikely, but we wanted to show we would not lie down easily. Ed Carr put the stamp on that statement when he was trailing by 4 in the 3rd period before planting his opponent for 6. I'm a softie for the come from behind victory and we saw two in as many nights. Ed Carr gets the OW award for getting the team rolling. Jack anzul faced a state ranked opponent and was unable to survive the 6 minutes. Tom Tracy dropped a one point decision to a wrestler with some decent credentials from last year. Tom looked good. If he wrestled that way last night he would have won that one. Mike Boardman was relentless in pursuing a pin he eventually got. We forfeited 103 and Patsy Davis took the mat. In dominating fasion, he took his opponent apart with a series of takedowns and tilts. Very impressive over an opponent that gave him a little more of a struggle last season. Sorry Patsy, but Ed Carr stole the OW already. We were in the match up until this point, which happens to be the toughest part of their line up. Gooby and Gotsch gave up a couple of falls, Willis refused to be pinned, but gave up the tech., and Stark had to back out on an injury default before McAuliffe was pinned. Mazzocchi was involved with the most exciting bout of the night, but unfortunately came up one point shy. Colwell was teching his opponent right before he pinned him in the second period and Costa was pinned to end the night.

The JV Dodgers were victorious when Kevin Choi pinned his opponent for the go ahead 36-31 score. With the match on the line, Kevin receives the JV OW. Other Dodgers that recorded pins were Brett Spelker, Matt Fastiggi, Sebastian Restrepo, and Nick Haboj. Matt Allen, Eamon Epstein each won by decision. Nick Picillo, Doug Capuder, Juan Giraldo, Joe Kennedy, Alex Post, and Matt Welter all saw some mat time. This was a huge improvement from last night. Let's hope we can keep it together and wrestle more aggaressively.

ROSELLE PARK TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Madison had a decent showing at the Roselle Park tournament over the holiday break. 10 varsity wrestlers competed and 7 were able to place. Ryan Colwell remains undefeated and was the Dodgers lone champion. He faced a tough Aaron Valesquez in the final and dominated the match with a 7-0 victory. Ryan is the OW. Three other dodgers managed to reach the finals and brought home silver medals. Patsy Davis had a nail biter in the semi's but came away with an overtime victory. He then faced the biggest 112lber I have ever seen. The size made it tough for Davis to get his shots off. Christian Mazzocchi met up with some familiar foes. First was Alfonse Scala of Hanover, who ducked him in the dual meet just days prior. Christian managed the match very well and got his hand raised. Next was Russ Bener of Roselle Park. Benner defeated Mazzocchi in the Region semi finals a year ago in overtime. Mazzocchi was not able to seek his revenge this time, but when they meet in the Regions at the end of the season, Mazzocchi will be ready. Mike Boardman was a finalist for the first time (Russ didn't do it until he was a senior). Mike is improving every match and will be a guy we look to during dual meets to bring us wins and bonus points. Also placing was 189-pounder Ed Carr (third), 160-pounder Anthony Costa (fifth) and 215-pounder Thomas Tracy (sixth).

On the JV of things, Eamon Epstein was the lone Champion. He too, takes home the OW for his efforts. Eamon saw a familiar foe as well. In the final he defeated fellow Dodger Peter Willis. Willis was a silver medalist (obviously) and was joined by Nick Picillo, Mike Coviello, and Matt Fastiggi who all reached the finals and earned silver as well. Kevin Choi continues with his early season success as a first year wrestler finishing 1-1 and in the 3rd/4th slot (those matches are not wrstled in JV). He was joined by Alex Post placing 3rd/4th, who also went 1-1 on the day. Joe Kennedy, Max Gotsch, and Nick Haboj also were 1-1. Matt Allen finished 2-1 and Juan Giraldo, Borris Klimushkin, and Matt Welter rounded out the Dodger squad..

PARSIPPANY HILLS JV RESULTS

The were two rounds of Dodger JV wrestling. Coach Carrol had the squad at an even 1-1 on the day. The first round they lost a nail biter at 43-36 but rebounded nicely to rip off a 45-22 win in round two. Undefeated in both rounds were: Nick Picillo (2-0), Max Gotsch (2-0), Nick Haboj (2-0), Matt Welter (2-0), Kevin Choi-dog-millionare (2-0), and Nick Lababara (1-0). Matt Welter was the OW in round one while round two OW was nabbed by Max "Oh My" Gotsch.

Dodgers that split 1-1 were: Colin Gooby, Juan Giraldo Farms, and Alex "The Fence" Post. Doug Capuder, Brett Spelker, Joe Kennedy, Borris Klimushkin, and Sebastian Restrepo also represented the Dodgers on the day.

PARSIPPANY RESULTS

It just doesn't get any tougher than this one! A 36-36 tie that resulted in a loss by vitue of the 8th tie breaker, 1st individual match points scored. Parsippany 12 to Madison's 11. As I told the kids, if we won by criteria it would have been a team win, but we lost, so it is a team loss. No individual effort is responsible. The coaching staff went over every match about two dozen times and found about 15 different ways we could have won the match outright. Lesson learned, everyone has a part and must know their role. Unless you took your opponent down and pinned him, there was a way you could have helped the team more then you may already have. Some highlights came from the pinners starting with Ed Carr who made sure he was in school on time so he could wrestle and help the team. Jack Anzul followed with a pin, as did Tom Tracy, and Mike Boadrdman. Injuries forced us to forfeit 103. Patsy Davis had a heroic pin in the last 12 seconds of his match. Patsy had made the 103 weight class for the 1st time and was drained from working out for three straight days to get himself on weight. Although he made weight, other injuries forced us to move him up to 112 (giving up all the weight he worked so hard to lose). Not only did he win, but he pulled of the the the last second pin as well. For those of you wondering why he might do this, the reason is so he will have the option to wrestle at that weight class at the end of the year (after the weight classes increase by two pounds each) and his body has naturally adjusted to working out all season. Willis and Epstein lost a couple heart breakers, but wasn't the whole evening heart breaking? Ryan Colwell, a Region III champion a year ago, faced a Region III runner up from a different weight class and had a solid 3-1 victory. Christian Mazzocchi also did his part in winning a tough decision. Christian and his opponent are ranked 4 and 5 respectively in the Daily Record polls and Christian made sure it was going to stay that way with a 5-2 victory. Christian also had the added pressure of having to win his match to tie the overall match (which we thought would give us the win). The OW for this was tough. Patsy is certainly deserving. Ed Carr is as well for making sure he got to school and stepping on the might despite not feeling 100%. Tom Tracy, not usually a go to guy, gets us the maximum team points with a pin like Davis, Carr, Anzul, and Boardman did. The deciding factor was the level of competition. Colwell and Mazzocchi share the OW. Both needed to win to close out the match against credible opponents, and did just that! Odd we had so many OW possibilities in a match of this nature.

The Jv was equally exciting. The JV came down to the last bout of the night as well. We needed a pin in that bout, but fell short as we did on the Varsity level. Gotsch, Fastiggi, Kennedy, Klimushkin, Post, and Picillo were unable to get their hand raised. Giraldo, Haboj, and Choi all secured their wins by way of pin. Matt Welter had a last second takedown to claim a major decision. Nick Haboj, with the fastest fall of the evening, claims the right to OW!

PARSIPPANY HILLS RESULTS

After a tough loss to sister school Parsippany, the Dodger rebound with a comfortable win against Parsippany Hills 51-27. The Dodger squad jumped out to a 24-0 lead with pins coming from Anzul, Carr, and Tracy. Mike Boardman received a forfeit. Nick Picillo was pinned at 103 by a wrestler he defeated just three days prior. Patsy Davis picked up a win by way of decision versus a very stubborn opponent. Spelker and Coviello were on the wrong end of a couple of pins before Peter Willis stopped the bleeding with a first period pin. This was after he of coarse took some blood time of his own. Eamon also found himself on the wrong end of a pin before McAuliffe dropped a 9-0 decision to Parsippany Hill's best wrestler. John Wrestled well despite losing. Colwell, Mazzocchi and Costa ended the night with pins. Tom Tracy was the OW for his relentless pursuit of a pin that he finally got with :32 left in the match.

The JV Dodgers were almost perfect on the evening. The ripped off a 59-7 win. Giraldo and Kennedy dropped a couple decisions. Which means NO JV DODGER WERE PINNED! Pin were recorded by Gooby, Gotsch, Fastiggi, Stark, Restrepo, Post, Haboj, Welter, and Choi. Matt Allen looked flawless with a 15-0 tech fall. 9 pins and a tech fall in 10 matches, very impressive! The JV OW goes to Sebastian Restrepo.

GLEN RIDGE, WESTFIELD, HIGHLAND PARK RESULTS

Three and "O" is the way to go! The Dodgers finished a perfect 3-0 on Saturday after their win on Friday night. Nice streak, let's keep it going.

Glen Ridge was our first opponent of the day and the Dodgers handed them a 57-18 loss. Just like last night, the Dodgers realed off a few pins to jump out 18-0. Costa and Carr pinned and Nick Haboj took a forfeit. Tom Tracy suffered a 1-point loss before Mike Boardman picked up another Dodger pin. Nick Picillo was pinned, but Patsy Davis took one back by pinning his opponent. Brett Spelker showed some flashes of what he is capable of before pinning his opponent and the Dodgers picked up another forfeit by "Mighty" Max Gotsch. Mike Coviello dropped a tough 6-3 decision up a weight from his normal 125lb spot before the Dodgers were awarded yet another forfeit to Eamon Epstein. McAuliffe was pinned and Ryan Colwell recieves our 4th forfeit of the match. If we are spotted 24 points, we better win big. In the last bout of the day, Christian Mazzocchi avenges Ryan Colwell's loss to Glen Ridge from a year ago. This after his opponent, Evan O'Keefe, defeated the 4th ranked 160lb wrestler in the state of New Jersey the night before. I guess this makes Christian the new 4th best 160lber in the state. Well, maybe not, but it does get him an OW.

Next up for the Dodgers were the Westfield Blue Devils. Westfield defeated Madison a year ago by 2 points and went on to be 12-0 at one poiint last season. Not so for the Blue Devils this year as the Dodgers picked up a 45-29 victory. Ed Carr fell victim to same opponent that Jack Anzul did in the Roselle Park tournament. Ed was upsett, but he will learn and get better from this loss. Nick Haboj likes this Varsity stuff as he improves his varsity record to 2-0 with his second forfeit of the day. Tom Tracy makes it interesting before he finally takes control of the match and scores a pin. Mike Boardman receives a forfeit and the Dodgers hand one back at 103. Westfield has a pretty good 103lber that Nick just isn't ready for yet. Davis pins and Spelker lets one slip away in OT. A lesson learned, you cannot relax at any point during the match. Gotsch faces the 2nd best wrestler saves a team point by not getting pinned. Matt Allen is filling in nicely as he gets the win and the pin! Matt Allen is the OW for stepping it up when it counts. Eamon Epstein didn't know he was wrestling until seconds before he hit the mat. This strategy worked well as he didn't have any time overthink the match and went out and wrestled well. Eamon wins 4-2. Eamon you are not wrestling the rest of the year unless I tell you last minute. DON'T be ready. Stark suffered a loss by way of pin. Ryan colwell suffers his first loss of the season. He faced a much improved Christian Barber that he is likely to face in the Region tournament down the road. Ryan will use this loss to drive him through the rest of the season. He didn't like that feeling and will work hard to make sure there aren't too many more. Mazzocchi and Costa again close out the match with pins.

Last up for the Dodgers was Highland Park. The Dodgers coasted to a 54-21 win. Nick Haboj finishes the day a perfect 3-0. So what if they were all forfeits? Tom Tracy realized that his opponent was not as good as he thought (after it was too late and he was off the mat). This is always a tough one to swallow and we are all guilty of it at some point. Hopefully Tom will realize he is pretty good and capable of winning a lot of matches if he beleives in himself a little more. Boardman got into a few flurries with a BIG BOY. His 285.6 lb opponent gave him a scare or two before Mike took control and planted him for six. Nick Picillo picks up a forfeit and Davis picks up a pin. Spelker got caught in a scramble that resulted in a pin. He will improve with more mat time and experience. Gotsch wastes no time with apin in :46 seconds. Matt Allen finishes the day at 2-0. Haboj told him its easier when you get forfeits, so Matt took the easy one this time. I guess he was tired from 2 minute 35 second match against Westfield. Eamon wrestled a pretty credible opponent and surprised me despite dropping a 4-2 decision. Eamon, along with Tom Tracy just need a little confidence and many wins will follow! McAuliffe faces their best and wrestles well even though the end result was a tech fall. Colwell and Mazzocchi both pin. Costa loses a tough one he wishes he had back. His opponent was no slouch, but Anthony left the mat knowing he was better. Ed caps the day with pin. Mike  Boardman is the OW. He finished 3-0 on the day with two pins and a forfeit win.

The JV Dodgers had a bit of a rough run. Coach Carroll was saddened when I pulled a few of his stars up to the Varsity level, but they filled in nicely in the big show! The JV squad dropped both rounds without their horsepower. There were not many JV's available, but everyone at least wrestled once. Kennedy, Fastiggi, Stark, Post, Choi, LaBarbera, and Giraldo all represented the JV Dodgers. LaBarbera and Stark provided the wins. Nick LaBarbera was the OW.

DOVER RESULTS

The Dodgers had enough to hold off Dover 39-21 despite splitting bouts 7-7. Ryan Colwell and Christian Mazzocchi kicked off the evening with a couple of pins. It was expected, but Mazzocchi's had a sweet taste to it. It was his 100th career win. Quite a milestone in this sport. Congratulations Christian. Anthony costa took the top ranked 160 pounder in Morris County in to two overtimes before dropping a one point decision. Jack anzul also dropped a close one by two points to another County ranked wrestler. Ed Carr would have none of that. He pinned his 4th ranked opponent in Morris County in just 50 seconds. Tom Tracy came up two points shy of a victory. Maybe by county time he will turn that loss around. Boardman takes the forfeit and Nick Picillo powers his opponent over the top of his head with a tight half nelson and plants him for the pin. The crowd went wild, and that was enough for me to name him OW. Doug Capuder receives a forfeit and Patsy Davis bumps up a weight and brings home a win. More importantly, he was approached by a casting director and asked to do a screen test for an upcoming wrestling movie. I don't think he is charging for autographs yet, so jump on them quick! Actor Paul Giamatti was on site to scout out some possible lead roles. We lost the last four bouts at 125, 130, 135, and 140. I had us winning every one of them, but we had enough to escape withthe win.

The JV Dodgers rolled winning 7 of 8 bouts and racking up a 39-6 victory. Post was the lone set back and Gooby was one point shy of a major. The rest all secured pins. Allen led the way followed by Klimushkin, Haboj, Giraldo, Choi, and Welter. Juan Giraldo was the OW.

PARSIPPANY JV RESULTS

We are almost Parsippanied out. One more trip. Next time at the Hills. None the less we took two victories home with us. Round one we rolled to a 60-18 slamming, and round two was a nail biter at 39-33. Representing the Dodgers were Juan Giraldo and Borris Klimushkin. They were joined by wrestlers who split bout at 1-1 on the day in likes of Nick Picillo, Colin Gooby, Alex Post, Nick Haboj, Kevin Choi, and Nick LaBarbara. Matt Welter finished up 2-1. The undefeated Dodgers included Brett Spelker, Max Gotsch, Matt Allen, Eamon Epstein, Conor Stark, Matt Fastiggi, and Matt Land. Round 1 OW was Mighty Matt LAnd, and round 2 went to Matt "Faster than" Fastiggi.

VERONA, WALDWICK, MOUNTAIN LAKES RESULTS

A banner day for the Dodger wrestlers. Another 3-0 sweep in a Saturday quad. Waldwick threw four forfeits Madison's way but had a few quality wrestlers none the less. Madison rolls 61-15. Mazzocchi, A.Costa, and Anzul kicked the match off with three first period pins to allow the Dodger squad to jump out to an 18-0 lead. Ed Carr faces the Warriors best and was unable to prevent the pin. Tom Tracy however got those points back with a pin of his own. Two forfeits ensued by Boardman and J. Costa before Davis wrestles another Warrior standout. Davis had him stuck, but the inept official calls potentially dangerous. Huh? Davis wins 9-0 despite the bad call. Spelker and Gotsch grab the other two forfeits before Willis dropps a close one in a gladiator type battle. Eamon gets his feet crossed and cannot get off his back before giving up six. John McAuliffe looks as good as he has all year in an exciting 12-8 dog fight. John receives the OW for his win. Colwell closes out the scoring with a pin over another Waldwick standout.

Verona would be the true test of the day. They entered the day at 8-2 and ahead of the Dodgers in the power point race for sectional seeding. A great team effort results in a 44-22 drubbing of the Hillbilies. Last weeks Westfield win, Wednesday's Dover win, and this Verona win should catapult the Dodgers into the second or third seed in the section. We were 7th seed last week and only six teams get in. What a way to start! Anthony Costa faces the 152 pounder, who bumped up a weight to avoid Mazzocchi. In dramatic fasion Costa records the pin at the closing buzzer of the 1st period. Ed Carr just can't get it going and saves a team point by not giving up the tech fall point. Jack Anzul faces a Hillbily stanoutand gives up six. Tom Tracy gives us some breathing room with a close, much needed win. Boardman has trouble keeping his opponent on his back and records a tech fall without realizing it. Pin would have been nice for the extra team point, but a tech works. Besides, there are not many Heavy weights recording tech's so it will look interesting in the newspaper. Johnny Costa stepps on the mat for the first time this season coming off an injury. Being in shape and wrestling shape are two totally different things. A tired Johnny does close the deal and picks up a must have win. Johnny gets the OW for coming back at the right time and helping the team with a win. Davis wastes no time in recording a pin in just under a minute. Spelker and Max Gotsch follow suit with pins. Willis is in another epic battle and again is desperately trying to rally in the third but falls one point short. Eamon dropps a close one and had his chances, but was unable to cpitalize. Epstein is opening up more on the mat, which will result in more wins soon. Stark gives up six in a flurry gone wrong. Colwell glides to a 6-3 win in a match he could have been more dominant, but he was never not in control of the match. Mazzocchi closes out the match with a pin.

Now that the tough one is by us, we can concentrate on former District nine foe, Mt. Lakes. The Lakers only give up one forfeit, but the Dodgers roll over them with a 52-18 exclamation point at the end of the day. Ed Carr gets the Dodgers on the board first with a :33 second pin. Anzul opens some eyes as he stays in the match against a state qualifier from a year ago. A "good loss" if there is such a thing. Tracy gives upa 3 point lead and an overtime takedown after what seemed to be Tom dominating the match. What is that saying? "He wishes he could have had that one back!" Tom was inches away from going 3-0 on the day. Boardman does however hit the 3-0 mark with a :13 second pin. To create a more favorable match up, Picillo goes 103, J. Costa goes 112. Costa, in just his second match of the season, bumps up a weight to test his skills. What is this coach (me) doing. Moving up am undersized 103 pounder to full sized 112 pounder fresh off an injury. Relax, I know what I am doing. Both Picillo and J. Costa pin their opponents. Picillo picks up the OW in the process. Davis tested his luck with one of their best and dropps a 1 point nail biter. Gotsch never got the engine runnuing and suffered a tech fall (notice he didn't give up the pin). Matt Allen returns to the Varsity mat and adds a 9-0 win which delivers the major. Eamon drops another nail biter. I don't hink he has any nails left, he is down to the nuckle. McAuliffe goes 2-0 on the day with a pin. Colwell receives a forfeit and Mazzocchi closes out the day with a pin. Undefeated on the day were J. Costa, 3-0 Picillo 1-0, Spelker 2-0, McAuliffe (2-0), Mazzocchi (3-0), Colwell (3-0), Anthony Costa 3-0, and Mike Boarman (3-0).

The JV squad picked up a pair of wins. The first round was 33-21 in favor of the Dodgers and the second was 48-6, also in favor of the Dodgers. Round one saw winners by way pin in by Joe Kennedy, Fastiggi, Restrepo, Choi, and Restrepo again. Matt Land wins a close one and the rest of the cast is Alex Post, Welter, Picillo, and Post again. Bout two had winners by way of pin in Fastiggi, Restrepo, Post, Kennedy, Haboj, Welter, and Nick LaBarbera. Land and Kennedy picked up wins, but Choi was not so lucky. JV OW's go to Kennedy in round one and LaBarbera in round two.

PARSIPPANY HILLS JV RESULTS

JV Dodgers roll to an impressive 2-0 at the Hills. Round 1 brought a 54-13 showing for the Dodgers. Gotsch, Allen, Fastiggi, Restrepo, Haboj, Land, Choi, and Welter all recorded pins. Gooby won a 6-5 decision as did Gotsch 4-0. Picillo, Giraldo, and Post were not so lucky, but two of the thre were in round 2.

Round 2 results in a 51-19 scamper by the Dodgers. Pins were recorded by Picillo, Gooby, Fastiggi, Restrepo, Post, Haboj, and Welter. Other winners were: Gotsch, Land, and Choi. Allen and Giraldo would not be so lucky.

Undefeated on the day were: Gooby, Gotsch, Fastiggi, Restrepo, Haboj, Choi, and Welter. OW goes to Gooby in round 1 and Land in round 2.

POPE JOHN RESULTS

I had this as a close one.  Madison rolls over Pope John winning 11 of the 14 bouts and racking up a 59-13. I had the split at 8 bouts to 6 in favor of the Dodgers. The only problem is I had differnt wrestlers winning that we had step it up. Anthony Costa and Jack Anzul entered hoping to avenge a loss from the Mount Olive tournament. Each wrestled better but were not able to overcome their opponents. Jack changed a first period pin in to a major decission and Anthony Costa left it all ont the mat in a 1- point. match. Brett Spelker had a tough one, but he is learning and geting better with every match.

We started at 103 and jumped out to an early lead we would not let go of. J. Costa pins, Davis majors. 125 and 130 brought out a nice surprise. I didn't have either of those. Gotsch picks up a huge pin versus his opponent and Willis follows it up with another pin. Epstein wins a close one against a kid who pinned Willis a year ago. Colwell tech's at 140 and McAuliffe turns a 13-10 win at Mount Olive into a tech fall! Wow what great improvement John!. Mazzocchi pins, Eddie Carr pins, and Mike Boardman pins. Tom Tracy received a forfeit. Max Gotsch gets the OW. I was hoping to save bonus points by Max but he had other ideas, like pinning in a match that the team truly needed at the time.

Every time I challege the team, we have had great success. We are coming together as a team and improving every time we step on the mat. The sky is the limit, so keep working hard!

The JV Dodgers were also victoreous for third time in two days. The final was 33-18. We gave up three pins by Fastiggi, Restrepo, and Gooby.  The pinners were: Post (twice), Picillo, LaBarband, and Welter).  Choi picks up a 15-11 victory. Alex Post was the OW for wrestling twice and recording two wins!

WHIPPANY RESULTS

The Dodgers win 43-24 extending their win streak to 10 in a row. That is not the only streak of the evening. The dodgers opened up winning every weight from 152 to 285. Mazzocchi started the streak with a pin. Anthony Costa didn't look impressive having eaten too much after weighing in at 152 for the first time, but got his hand raised anyway. Carr, Anzul, and Tracy all recorded pins before Boardman was awarded a forfeit. Things must have been going too smoothly because Davis was the only winner from 103 to 140. Yes, this streak was a losing streak. Luckily for us there were not too many bonus points awarded. This is the better part of the panthers line up, but we should have collected a few wins in here somewhere. Johnny Costa had his mind in other places and was unable to wrestle to his ability which cost him a win. Davis started slow but was able to get the tech. fall late in the match. Spelker lost a 4-0 decision that is a result of not having as much mat experience as his opponent. Gotsch gave up six, not because he was overmatched, but got himself in a precarious position. Willis gave a 5 pointer early which both drained his energy and made the comeback very difficult. Epstein wrestled one of their best and hung tight only giving up a decision. McAuliffe wrestles one of their best and gives 6 back before Colwell returns the favor with a pin in :31 seconds to end the night. Jack Anzul's first period pins earns him the OW.

MADISON QUAD, MORRIS HILLS - MILBURN- BERNARDS RESULTS

Bernards was the first Dodger victim in the Madison home quad. the Dodgers made a statement in a 63-12 beating. Davis opens the day with a quick pin followed by Spelkers 5-4 win by decision. Gotsh pins, Willis wins by decision, McAuliffe faces their best and is wrestling well before getting caught up in a bad position off a scramble and giving up 6. Colwell tech. falls, and Mazzocchis pins in :35. Anthony Costa lost one he shouldn't have. He pinned an opponent that beat his Bernards opponent. He too is pinned of a flurry gone wrong. This loss will not hurt him as we don't face Bernards again and the seeding for the rest of the year is based on criteria. If it were to happen, this is the match the team could absorb the blow. Carr pins in :52 seconds, Anzul pins in 2:20, Tracy wins by 12, and Boardman pins in 1:37. Johhny Costa closes the match with a pin 3:57. Davis takes the OW. He always works for 6 minutes to get what the team needs. He didn't have to work much in this one, but he is reliable.

Morris Hills would be the test for the day. The Dodgers prevail with a 39-26 win! This one started at 119 and Spelker gave up 6 in a match we thought we had a shot in. Gotsch lost a close one only allowing 3 team points. This helps not giving up bonus points. Willis faces their 2nd best and starts off well, but gets his shoulder banged up and gives up the tech. saving the theam one bonus point. In one of the most exciting bouts of the day, Epstein rallies back and holds off a late takedown to grab a win by the score of 10-9. One thing about Epstein he never stops trying! McAuliffe takes a forfeit. Colwell majors their best in a bout that was an exciting with throws and counters. Mazzocchi delivers his usual pin for the team. Costa is in a must win match for the Dodgers and delivers a pin. Those bonus points made up some ground and put us in a comfortable spot. Carr stays hot with a pin, but Anzul let one slip away with 8 seconds left. Jack cannot and will not allow this to happen again. Tracy gives up a decision before Boardman gets a big win for himself. I had Mikey winning this bout despite his opponent placing in the Morris County tournament last year. We have come to count on him often and he has pulled through. Boardman will now be seeded in the tournament this year and ranked in the Daily Record. Boardman gets the OW. Johnny Cosa had a tough opponent and gave up 6. He is much better than this and needs to shake this funk off. Davis records a tech. fall to end the day. This was actually a very important tech. fall because it gave us a 13 margin of victory which will translate into an additional bonus point for sectional seeding.

Neighbor and Rival Millburn, would be the next on the dodgers 13 match win steak. Madison wins 48 - 30. Max Gotsch starts the match off with a first period pin. Allen fills in for Willis and looks great in the first period getting the first takedown and ending the period 2-2. The match gets away from him and he eventually gets pinned, but shows he is one step away from being a full time contributor. Eamon wrestled his heart out and dropped a one point decision. He too is one step away from turning some of these losses into wins. He looks much better as of late. McAuliffe gives up 6, but Colwell gets it back. Mazzocchi and Anthony Costa add to that total with two more pins. Anzul relies too much on his one move and the match gets away from him. Pssst...Jack you need to diguise it a little better or try something else if it is not working. Carr delivers 6 and is becoming a reliable contributor that the team is starting to depend on. Tracy gets run over and pinned. No literally, he stops wrestling and gets run over and pinned. Tom... you are better than that! Boardman gets us our 6 back, but Johhny gives it back as he faces their freshman standout and hope of their future. With more mat time, he will close that gap. Johhny's potential is very good and he will gwt better every time he wrestles. Capuder and Davis are awarded a couple of forfeits to end the match. The Millers had no 112 pounder, but elected not to wrestle Patsy as the match was already decided. Anthony Costa gets the OW for winning the matches he needed to today.

The JV Dodgers did some but kicking as well. In round one they ripped off a 66-13 victory. Winners by way of pin were: Restrepo X 2, Kennedy, Haboj X 2, Fastiggi X 2, Giraldo, Welter, Picillo, Gooby. Picillo also lost a tough one in OT, while Gooby suffered a loss by way of fall and Nick LaBarbara dropped a major decision. Not bad 11-3 in matches for the team.

Round two is just as bad a beating as round one when the Dodgers tear off a 63-25 shalacking. Winners by pin were: Nick LaBarbara, Giraldo, Restrepo, Land, Haboj, Choi, Fastiggi, Picillo, Allen, and Gooby. Allen also picked up a win by a 6-2 decision. Matt you broke the streak!! Fastiggi, Welter, and Kennedy each gave up a decision. Kenedy also dropped a major. Picillo and Land gave up a couple of pins. 11-6 in matches, but tons of bonus points provided the difference.

OW's are Kennedy versus Millburn, Allen Versus Bernards, and Gooby versus Morris Hills.

Round two

PARSIPPANY JV RESULTS

The JV Dodgers continue to roll in Parsippany improving their record to 15-4 with a 33-21 score in round one and 39-21 score in round 2! Round one had a few set backs as Johnny Costa and Juan Giraldo, and Kevin Choi suffered losses by way of pin, while Kennedy, Haboj, and Land dropped decisions. On the brighter side, Spelker pulls off an OT win, Gooby, Gotsch, Allen, Fastiggi, Welter, LaBarbara, Coviello, and Stark all win by decision. Where are the pins guys? Haboj is the only winner by pin in the first round, but Mike Coviello snatches the OW for his return to the mats in style (with a win).

Round two saw set backs with Giraldo and Post giving up pins and Kennedy, Welter, and Labarbara losing by a collective 6 points. The bread winners chalkin up pins were Spelker and LaBarbara. Winning by decision were Gooby, Gotsch, Allen, Fastiggi, Haboj, Choi, Coviello, and Stark. Matt Land had a major in an 8-0 shut out. Nick LaBarbara went 2-0 on the day and gets the OW in round 2.

PEQUANNOCK RESULTS

Tough home loss for the Dodgers as they drop a 38-25 match to Pequannock filled with momentum changes and excitment. Davis opens the night and avenges a loss from a year ago with a 4-2 victory. Spelker gets a point near the final buzzer to save a team point in a decision. Gotsch holds on to his 8-0 lead to give us an additional team point with his major. Allen had a job. Don't get pinned. He looked great and I though that we were not only going to not get pinned, but possibly not teched. Oops, with :24 seconds on the clock Matt got tied up and that was it. Willis had a similar job. He saved some points by only giving up the major. Epstein fell one point shy in 2-1 nail biter. Colwell stops the bleeding with a pin. Christian Mazzocchi get caught up in roll through and gives up two to a very defensive wrestler and is unable to overcome the set back in a 3-1 loss. Costa has an equally frustrating match as he drops a 3-1 battle. Carr wastes no time and plants his opponent in :20 seconds. We have a heart beat again. Anzul gives up a major, but we are stll in this. Tom Tracy looks awful for two and a half periods but is still only down 3-2. He shakes to funk off, whacks a sweet head lock, and delivers the pin. The place goes nuts. The energy level rises through the roof. The Dodgers are down 1. Boardman, like cousin Davis, also attempts to avenge a loss from a season ago. Unfortunately, he gets cuaght in a flurry and planted. It's over Pequannock is up by 7 with one bout to go. The most the Dodgers could get is 6. Johnny takes to the mat and he, too is on the wrong end of a sixer. Tom Tracy gets the OW.

The JV win yet another, extending thier record to 16-4 with a win over the panthers 21-12. Gooby and Choi gave up 6's. Welter won 4-3 and the rest are Dodger pins. Kennedy, Post, and Haboj all record pins for the dodgers. Kennedy get the OW.

MORRIS COUNTY TOURNAMENT RESULTS

11 Dodgers took thier chances at Morris County gold. 4 were able to reach the medal rounds, and two did gain gold. John McAuilffe and Mike Boardman each picked up a win, but came up short of placing. Boardman lost a 2pt. decison to the eventual Champion. He gave up 3 back points and battled back, but it just wasn't enough. Mike now knows the importance of every second of the match. If this were the Region III tournament, it would have been a season ender! Matt Allen gained some valuable mat experience as did Tom Tracy. Eamon Epstein lost to an opponent he has faced early in the season. The match was much closer this time around showing Eamon's imprivement. Ed Carr, who has been so brilliant with headlocks and pins had the roles reversed as he was upset in the pre-liminary round when he was pinned with a headlock. Anzul dropped an overtime match that left him and the coaching staff scratching their heads. Anthony Costa had his Pequannock opponent pinned. An opponent he lost tjust days earlier. The ref didn't call it. To add insult to injury, he is up by 1 point and his opponent his opponent is desperately trying to get a takedown. Costa headlocks him in what appears to be a take down and 2 back points, only to learn that no takedown is awarded until he is reversed and loses by 1. HE GOT TOTALLY SCREWED! Had he advanced I am confident that he would have beat his next opponent and been in the finals. Extrememly unfortunate, but he did end up 6th. A Morris County place is very credable.

Davis, Colwell, and Mazzocchi all reach the finals. Davis wins 1-0 and claims Morris County gold. This was his first HS tournament Chapionship. He did it in style as he was unscored upon through the tournament. Colwell evenges a finals loss from a year ago. He was much more impressive this time around as he dominated on his feet with an 8-4 victory. This was his 2nd Morris County Championship. He won the tournament as a freshman. Mazzocchi was about 20 seconds away from being in the running for the OW voting on by Morris County coaches. How he got to the final was impressive. He pins Jefferson's Vasille for the second straight year. Vasille is a very respectable opponent. Next he dismantled the top seed Harrington from Mendham 10-5. This opened a few eyes arounf the gym. I was approached by both coaches and officials who expressed their amazement in how well Mazzocchi looked. He was 20 seconds from sealing the deal, but let up a takedown to get edged by a point. Great tournament, but I know he wanted that title. Davis and Colwell are Madison OW's for the tournament.

Next up for the Dodgers is a dual meet with Bound Brook and a quad in Cedar Grove. We have clinched the 2nd seed in the state sectionals, so we will be hosting that match next Wednesday. Let's advance to the final this year!

BOUND BROOK RESULTS

Light's, camera, ACTION! The Dodgers capture a 38-28 battle over the Crusaders of Bound Brook on MSG Varsity. Jack Anzul had a huge win to get the Dodgers rolling. Down 2 in the 2nd period he comes up big with a pin. If we didn't know what comes next he would be a shoe in for OW. Mike Boardman is in what MSG called the "Feature bout of the Evening". It was all that it was bille dup to be. Mike took and early 2-0 lead that was later a 3-2 deficit in the 3rd period. Mike escapes in the 3rd to tie it up and prevails in the 4th overtime with an escape and 1 point win. Johnny Costa saved us a bonus point by not giving up the pin. Davis was only able to grab a decision, but Gooby made up the difference by only giving up the major and saving two bonus points. Gooby was pinned by this same opponent last year. Max also gave up a major and Willis started the 3rd period down 1, but was unable to overcome the deficit. Eamon rode a bar the entire 3rd period and was unable to turn his opponent, but held on to the 1 point victory. John McAualiffe was a step behind. His opponent was a little more athletic and quicker than he in the scramble and came away with the fall. Remaining Seniors we need you! Colwell makes it interesting but get the job done with a 3rd period fall. Mazzocchi follows with a quick fall. Anthony Costa shreds his opponent and is pinning his opponent for about 30 seconds as time runs out in the second period. It was good enough for the tech. fall. Knowing that reigning 2 X State champ Campolatano is going to end the evening, Ed Carr takes the mat needing to not give up a pin or Tech. His Opponent is sharp on his feet and records a couple of takedowns via a "boot scoot". Ed nails a takedown to end the 2nd period and gets an escape to start the 3rd and draw himself to within 2 at 7-5. It looks like he can keep it close. Until............He wacks a headlock and plants his opponent for 6 and the team Victory! Matt Welter got the honor of facing a disgruntled Camolatano. Lets just say he spent more time getting his picture taken with him after the match then he did on the mat with him. Do I really need to justify it? CARR IS THE OW.

The JV Dodgers record another victory winning 5 of the 6 contested bouts. Coviello, Haboj, and Giraldo all recorded wins by way of decision. Coviello got a second nod and let up the decision the second time around. Land wins a tight one and Allen pins. Matt Land was the OW.

MADISON HOME JAMBOREE RESULTS

Coach Carroll had the two rounds split at 1-1 for the day and bringing the JV overall record to 18-5 for the year. In round one we dropped a 58-28 eye opener. Winners by way of pin were Kennedy, Haboj, and Welter. Gotsch won two matches by decision and Coviello picks up a major. Other Dodger representitives in round one were J. Costa, Picillo, Gooby, Fastiggi twice , Allen, Klimushkin, Land, LaBarebara, Restrepo  and Choi. Gooby, Allen, Land, and Choi all lost close decisions and Costa suffered an injury default.

In round two the dodgers rebounded and tore off a 66-29 score to get back on the saddle. Leading the charge of pins were: Coviello, Allen, Stark, Kennedy, Land, Haboj, LaBarbera, Giraldo, Klimushkin, and Gotsch. We only win by pin in round two. Other Dodgers were: Picillo, Gooby, Giraldo, Fastiggi, Post, and Welter.

Nick Haboj was the OW in round one while Borris Klimushkin was the OW in round two.

NJSIAA STATE SECTIONAL- NEW PROVIDENCE RESULTS

In the biggest match of the year for the Dodgers, delayed by snow and school closings, the squad prevailed with a 47-26 victory and invitation to the North II Section I Finals!

The match started with Ed Carr picking up his 18th win of the season (all by the same method) and starting us off with a pin. Jack Anzul had the privilage of wrestling Coach Carroll's son and looked good up until he was cradled and found no way out. Tom Tracy slowed the match and gave up a decision, but that is what we needed there. Mike Boardman dropped a one pointer to a Region ranked # 2 wrestler. We didn't choose bottom because his opponent is a very skilled wrestler with legs on top. Mike took one for the team not give up bonus points. This was the strength of their line up and we came away -6. Good start. Johnny Costa is doing his best not to give up anymore bonus and trailing by 6 going into the final period. Johhny sees an opening and cements his oppont for SIX!!! The crowd goes crazy, his father runs down to the mat, the team knows this is a huge spark. Patsy Davis follows with a pin in the first period. Gooby sees one of the best lower weights and gives up six. He fought hard and almost saved the points. Gotsch gets us another six with a second period pin.  Willis has a game plan outlined from the scouting report and is following it to a tee. He relaxes in the third period and ends up dropping a 1 point decision. OUCH SOOO close. McAuliffe gives up another six, but we have the hammers waiting to close the deal. Colwell techs., Mazzocchi pins, and Costa has no pressure as the match is clinched. He is losing 3-0 in the third in a match I had us pinning? OK he pins his opponent in the third. It would have been an interesting last bout if his brother didn't get the pin earlier. Johhny Costa is the OW.

SECTIONAL FINAL - ROSELLE PARK RESULTS

Well we made it here. A Bit overmatched in a 51-19 loss to a team that may be in the top 20 at the end of the season. Mazzocchi wins a tight one by one. Colwell bumps up to get a good match before the individual states begin but gets caught in a flurry and gets packed. Better now then when it counts! Costa drops a 6-3 decision to a wrestler who is expected to be wrestling in Atlantic City next month. Anthony can get hot over the next two weeks and extend his season. Ed Carr waves his magic wand oncve again and gets another pin. Anzul gets pinned, Tracy gets pinned, Mike Boardman gets a pin. J. Costa gets pinned, Davis avenges a loss from a year ago and gets a major. Gooby hangs tough and only gives up a major. Gotsch pinned, Willis teched, Eamon drops a close one at 6-3 and McAuliffe pinned. Davis gets the OW! Nice season! Let's see what we can do individually!
